Introduction
None of the six countries I looked at runs a Soviet-style ministry of information. They don't need one. In my view, control in modern democracies works through regulators, codes, blocking orders, age checks, quiet data requests, subsidies and rules about what appears first on a screen or in a feed. Each deep dive below is organised under one section, Control of Expression, Speech & Information, with six parts: internet searches; social media searches and removals; social media access and ID; social media warrants, known or unknown to the user; government-controlled print; and government-controlled television and radio. Where I could, I used the platforms' own transparency reports. Every claim is sourced on the country page; gaps are marked [Needs source].
